Programs · Chai Chat

An interactive gathering wherein we explore contemporary social concerns and other issues that have implications for our spiritual and communal cultivation.

We invite you to read ahead of time, join us with your favourite tea or coffee, and engage in critical and constructive conversation.

For July 27th we will discuss the short - 7 page - chapter entitled “The Place of the Solitaries” in Sue Halpern’s Migrations to Solitude: The Quest for Privacy in a Crowded World.

Access each session’s article(s) via the Reading Resources Folder at least a week in advance.

Guiding Questions to Consider While You Read

  • In what ways does their solitary lifestyle dovetail with Islamic ethical ideals?

  • In what ways does their lifestyle separate from Islamic conceptions of “community”?

    • Is there a way to understand their perspective without a strong condemnation or is their approach to life beyond the pale?

  • How does Ned and Mae’s life challenge your conception of time? consumption? success?
